"When a player receives the Butkus Award he will know two things. First, he is recognized as the best of the best linebackers in America. Second, and in the long run most important, he will understand that this recognition brings a responsibility to serve others by giving back."
Instituted in 1985, The Butkus Award® is one of the elite individual honors in college football. This year, The Butkus Foundation, a 501c3 non-profit organization, takes stewardship of the award and comes home to Chicago to fully realize the original purpose of honoring athletic achievement and service to the community while honoring the nation’s best high school, college, and professional linebackers. An independent Butkus Award Selection Committee, headed by Pro Football Weekly’s Hub Arkush and comprised of 51 experts including professional, college and high school scouts, and prominent sports journalists, will conduct the selection process.
On Jan. 13, 2009, for the first time in 24 years, The Butkus Award comes home to Chicago for a celebration and to raise funds for the I Play Clean™ campaign. Enjoy the first opportunity to purchase tickets for an evening of first-class, football fun at the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame. A VIP reception begins at 5:30 p.m. with the full Game Day festivities kicking off at 6:30 p.m.
